These phonics and reading activities books provide excellent teaching resources for classroom or homeschool lessons. This 188 page 1st grade phonics activity book by Bronwyn Tester and Sue Horoch helps children learn about language by using it. They learn to read and write by actively participating in a variety of reading and writing activities. A knowledge of sound-symbol relationships is an important component of children's language learning and provides vital word attack skills. However, grapho-phonics is not the only strategy children need. It is one of a number of strategies children can use to approach an unknown word or get meaning from print. Children become aware of the range of strategies available to them by constant involvement in activities that require them to read and write for real purposes within meaningful, experience-based contexts.

Children develop problem-solving strategies for reading and writing as their confidence and understanding of sound-symbol relationships grows. The purpose of Phonics in Context is to provide teachers with a variety of strategies and activities that focus attention on developing strong sound-symbol relationships through experiences with the spoken and written word.

Features of Phonics in Context include:
  • Strategies for Developing Sound-Symbol Relationships
  • More than 200 Illustrated Phonics Activities
  • Build vital phonics skills
  • Target blends and digraphs
  • Develop strong sound-symbol relationships
  • Meaningful experiences with the spoken and written word help children build the vital phonics skills they need to approach unknown words and to get meaning from print.
  • For each sound, you’ll find a word list, letter combinations for the sound family, and a list of picture books to reinforce each sound.

Using Phonics in Context
Each digraph taught in this book begins with an introductory page containing:
  • Word Bank Brainstorm - included as a time saver to assist teachers in exploring words containing the focus digraph
  • Interesting Words - comprised of a further development of the brainstorm, in this group of words is likely to generate discussion because of a high interest or unfamiliarity to children.
  • Language Experiences - presented as a list of strategies and activities for each focus digraph language experiences
  • Letter Combinations provided as an example to show that there is often more than one way to represent any one sound for the same sound family. For example: The sound 'i' as in 'my' may be represented by a number of different letter combinations. Parents and teachers should strive to develop children's awareness of sound-letter combinations by acknowledging their suggestions during discussions. Alternative letter combinations are included at the foot of the introductory page of each digraph.

Presentation of Digraphs
Although the digraphs are in alphabetical order, this is not the recommended teaching sequence. Use the first grade phonics activity books as a source of language-based integrated activities to complement your language programs. "Dip Into" the various sections as required by your programs.

Literature References
The final page for each digraph provides a list of picture books as references. The text and content of these selections provide opportunities to highlight a particular digraph and to focus children's attention on the digraph in a meaningful context.
