UTAH HOMESCHOOL LAW
Compulsory
School Age: 6 - 18
Utah state
law offers two legal homeschooling options: 1) operate a
homeschool or 2) establish a multi-family homeschool group as a private
school.
-
The first option
is to operate a homeschool. Parents wishing to homeschool
their children must complete and file an affidavit each year with
the local school board. Children schooling under this option
are required to attend instruction for as many days as required for
public school students. Homeschool students must also study
the same core subjects as required for public school students, which
are as follows:
-
Grades K -
6: reading/language arts, math, science, social studies, art,
health education, physical education, and educational technology
-
Grades 7 -
8: language arts, math, science, social studies, art, physical
education, health education, and career and technical education,
life, and careers
-
Grades 9 -
12: language arts, math, science, social studies, art, physical
and health education, career and technical education,
educational technology, general financial literacy, and library
media skills
There are no
regulations requiring teacher qualifications, recordkeeping, or
testing for this option.
-
The second
option is to establish a multi-family homeschool group as a private
school. Under this option, the Department of Education has no
authority, and therefore there are no state regulations requiring
attendance, subjects, teacher qualifications, school board
notification, recordkeeping, or testing.
