RHODE ISLAND HOMESCHOOL LAW
Compulsory
School Age: 6 - 16 (by September 1)
Rhode
Island
state law offers one legal homeschooling option, which is to operate a
state-approved homeschool. In order to begin homeschooling in
Rhode Island, parents/guardians must present their homeschool program to
the local school board for approval. Homeschool program proposals
must demonstrate how state standards and regulations will be met.
Homeschool students must attend instruction for a "substantially equal"
amount of time as required for public schools. Attendance records
must be kept and made available to the school board upon request.
Required subjects include reading, writing, English, geography, math,
U.S. history, government, health and physical
education, Rhode Island history and government in grade 4, and the U.S.
and Rhode Island Constitutions in high school grades. Assessments
may be required annually; during the approval process parents and the
school board must agree on a means of evaluating the child's academic
progress. Regulations requiring parent/teacher qualifications
do not exist for this option.
