NORTH CAROLINA HOMESCHOOL LAW
Compulsory
School Age: 7 - 16
North
Carolina
state law offers one legal homeschooling option, which is to establish
and operate a homeschool. North Carolina defines homeschools as
non-public schools in which a parent, legal guardian, or household
member provides the student with academic instruction. Two
household schools are permitted. In order to begin homeschooling,
parents or legal guardians must file a notice of intent with the North
Carolina Division of Non-Public Education upon starting a homeschool
program. Homeschool students are required to attend instruction
for at least nine calendar months each year, excluding holidays and
vacations. There are no required subjects to be taught; however,
students are required to participate in annual standardized tests which
cover English grammar, reading, spelling, and math. The results of
the tests must be made available to the school board for inspection.
The parent/teacher must hold a high school diploma or GED to meet the
minimum teacher qualifications. Parents must also keep attendance
and immunization records and standardized test results.
