MONTANA HOMESCHOOL LAW
Compulsory
School Age: 7 - 16 (or upon completion of the 8th
grade, whichever occurs later)
Montana
state law offers one legal homeschooling option, which is to establish
and operate a homeschool. Parents wishing to homeschool must
annually submit a notice of intent to the local school superintendent.
Children in grades 1 - 3 are required to attend 720 hours of instruction
per year and children in grades 4 - 12 are required to attend 1080
hours of instruction per year. Children schooling under this
option must receive an "organized course of study" similar to the "basic
instructional program" as offered in the public schools; beyond this
description, no specifications exist for required subjects.
Attendance and immunization records must be maintained and made
available to the local school superintendent upon request. There
are no requirements regarding parent/teacher qualifications or testing.
