LOUISIANA HOMESCHOOL LAW
Compulsory
School Age: 7 - 18
Louisiana
state law offers two legal homeschooling options: 1)
operate a state-approved homeschool or 2) operate a homeschool as a private
school.
-
The first legal
homeschooling option in Louisiana is to operate a homeschool that
has been approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary
Education (SBESE). Parents must submit an application along
with a copy of the child's birth certificate to the SBESE within 15
days of starting their homeschool program; this application must be
renewed annually. Required attendance is 180 days per year.
Required subjects must be equivalent to those offered in public
schools and must include the Declaration of Independence and Federalist
Papers. Testing requirements are met when a child passes or
scores at or above his/her grade level on a state-approved
standardized test or if a certified teacher testifies through
written statement that the child is being taught in accordance to
state standards. Records that must be kept are any documents
that meet the testing requirement, which should be submitted with
the homeschool application renewal each year. There are no
statutes specifying parent/teacher qualifications.
-
The second
option is to operate a homeschool as a private school.
Parents/guardians wishing to pursue this option must notify the
State Department of Education within the first 30 days of the school
year. The notification should include the child's legal name,
birth date, race, and gender. Required attendance is 180 days
per year. Subjects studied must be equivalent to those
offered in public schools and must include the Declaration of
Independence and Federalist Papers. There are no requirements
regarding parent/teacher qualifications, recordkeeping, or testing.
