GEORGIA HOMESCHOOL LAW
Compulsory
School Age: 6 - 16
Georgia
state law offers one legal homeschooling option, which is to establish
and conduct a home study program. In order to begin homeschooling
under this option, a notice of intent must be filed with the local
superintendent within 30 days of starting homeschool and
by September 1 each year thereafter. The
child is required to attend 180 days of instruction each year for 4
½
hours each day and must study reading, language arts, math, social
studies, and science. Teacher certification is not required, but
any parent or private tutor who teaches the child in the home study
program must possess a high school diploma or GED. Attendance
records must be kept and submitted monthly to the superintendent.
An annual progress report must also be written and kept.
Standardized tests are required every three years beginning in the 3rd
grade and test results must be kept.
