DELAWARE HOMESCHOOL LAW
Compulsory
School Age: 5 - 16
Delaware
state law offers three legal homeschooling options: 1) establish a
single-family homeschool, 2) establish a multi-family homeschool, or 3)
establish a single-family homeschool in coordination with the local
school district. Under all of these options, Delaware statute
requires 180 days of attendance per year.
-
The
first option is to establish a single-family homeschool. Under
this option, parents or guardians are responsible for educating
their child in their own home. Parents are required to file an
attendance report and an enrollment statement with the Department of
Education each year, both of which must be completed on forms
prescribed by the Department of Education. Attendance must be
reported no later than July 31 each year, and a statement of
enrollment must be submitted by the last school day of September.
Required subjects are the same as those taught in public schools.
No requirements regarding teacher qualifications, recordkeeping, or
testing are specified under Delaware statute for this option.
-
The
second option is to establish a multi-family homeschool. Under
this option, the education of the child is provided by the parents
or guardians of children in one or more residences in which the
children are not all related to each other as siblings. The
multi-family homeschool shall appoint a liaison to report attendance
and enrollment information on all families involved to the
Department of Education each year. Both the attendance report
and statement of enrollment must be completed on forms prescribed by
the Department of Education. Attendance must be reported no
later than July 31 each year, and a statement of enrollment must be
submitted by the last school day of September. Required
subjects are the same as those taught in public schools. No
requirements regarding teacher qualifications, recordkeeping, or
testing are specified under Delaware statute for this option.
-
The
third and final option is to establish a single-family homeschool in
coordination with the local school district. Under this
option, parents or guardians are responsible for educating their own
child in their own residence using curriculum approved by the local
school superintendent.
