English Vocabulary
Some unabridged English dictionaries list a total of about 750,000 words in the English language, making English perhaps the largest of the 2,700 known languages. By comparison, German vocabulary includes only 185,000 words and French has only 100,000 words. However, the average educated English speaking person only knows about 20,000 words and only uses about 10% of that or about 2,000 words per week. So the average person knows less than 3% of the total English vocabulary leaving 97% of words unknown. The average person uses only 0.3% of the English language per week.
