As with the Nick Jr. television show on which the game is based, player activities are guided by many of the TV characters including Blue, Joe, Tickety, Marky Marker, Periwinkle, Mr. Salt, Mrs. Pepper, and many more. Teaching features familiar props, such as refrigerator magnets, alarm clocks, chalkboards, stickers and so forth, which are intended to increase the comfort level of the surroundings while providing fun in a learning environment.
Children can grow with the program through the use of three difficulty settings, and are rewarded with printable project pages upon successful completion of an activity. The mouse-driven interface offers plenty of surprises within each room, including a hide-and-seek game with Joe. A parental guidance section offers a 'Beyond the Computer' list of curriculum goals and activities that can be played around the house when away from the computer. ~ Michael L. House, All Game Guide
ABOUT BLUE'S CLUES: That sound you hear is the cheering of 3-year-olds everywhere. For those unfamiliar with Blue's Clues, let's just say it has been an institution among preschoolers - not to mention their parents - since it premiered in 1996. In each episode live-action host Joe (Donovan Patton) invites young viewers into his cartoon world to help him and animated puppy Blue find the clues necessary to solve a puzzle.
The series' unique play-along approach has been shown to help preschoolers develop important cognitive and problem-solving skills, largely by making them active participants. It's also turned Blue's Clues into one of Nickelodeon's most successful, groundbreaking franchises.
"We always pushed the envelope in learning," explains Traci Paige Johnson, the program's co-creator and executive producer. "We research at every stage to make sure kids understand the storyline, and that the games are working to elicit learning and interaction.
"Looking back, I'm proud that we've raised the bar of what preschool programming can and should be," says Johnson, herself a mother of two. "You know that classic book 'All I Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten?' We like to say 'All you need to know for Kindergarten you learned on Blue's Clues.'"
