Instructional Fair's Big Book of Everything for Preschool has been designed to provide teachers of young children [ages 3 to 5] with a wide range of activities in nine of the most common preschool curricular areas [Blocks, Drama, Music and Movement, Art, Cooking, and Nutrition, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies] . A Parent Involvement chapter and a Bulletin Board chapter full of interactive activities are also included.
The activities in this book were created to be as developmentally appropriate as possible to best suit the needs of 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds. Children at this age need activities involving specific criteria. For example, the activities should take into account the children's physical, emotional, social and cognitive developmental needs. The activities should also be interactive in the sense that children can participate in the activities with adults and other children. Activities involving materials that are concrete, real and relevant to the lives of children are also vital to their growth and development at this age.
In addition, the activities provided throughout the book give you the opportunity to monitor the children's developmental progress. This monitoring can be done by the implementation of portfolios which are collections of the children's work, notes on their behavior and other indicators of their individual needs and accomplishments. Portfolios serve to guide planning for each child and to facilitate parents' understanding of their children's performance.
Another feature of the activities involves their design for groups of various sizes. Some can be done individually, and others can be done by the whole class. Most, however, are more appropriate for small groups of children [4-6] or intermediate sizr groups [8-12] .
Each of the eleven chapters in this book begins with a brief introduction of the subject and a discussion of the activities" relationship to the developmental needs of the children.
Each activity includes:
_the general learning goal of the activity_These list the specific developmental objectives of the activity, including Fine Motor, Gross Motor, Cognitive, Language, Pre-writing and Social. [These skills are also presented in table form in the back of the book to help you locate activities that provide development in specific skill areas]
_a list of everything needed for the activity
_exact instructions for conducting the activity
_ideas for alternative versions of the activity and for extending the activity into other areas of the curriculum
Though the Parent Involvement chapter is devoted entirely to involving parents, all the chapters include activities which require the participation of parents. When this is the case, we have provided model letters and check lists that you can use for parent communication.
Finally, it is hoped that by using these activities, you will become more adept at creating your own activities and at incorporating the principles of developmentally appropriate practice in them.
This book, 320 pages, is recommended for preschool.
