The Standards-Based Math series is based on the most recent standards from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The proposed ten NCTM standards, which are a description of what an existing curriculum should enable students to know and do, can be divided into two categories. Content standards are those five that state the content (skills) that students should be taught and should learn. These are Number and operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability. The Process standards, which guide instructors in facilitating lessons that enable students to acquire knowledge and achieve success, are the second set of standards. These standards are Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Communication, Connections and Representation.
For the purpose of this first grade math practice activity book, the Content standards have been highlighted, and each page is labeled with its appropriate standard and skill. The Process standards are woven into the exercises on each page.
The following are simplified descriptions of the Content standards.
