Teaching phonics with Explode the Code lesson plans helps kids recognize and combine phonetic sounds in order to read words.
This program combines 2nd grade materials for Explode the Code and Beyond the Code. Explode the Code is a popular program which provides beginning readers with experience recognizing and combining phonetic sounds in order to read words, phrases, sentences, and stories.
Beyond the Code is a set of companion books for Explode the Code, designed to build comprehension and reasoning skills. Beyond the Code helps refine reading skills, develop comprehension, reasoning, and critical thinking, and finds parallels with individual experience. Beyond the Code features longer stories with exercises that follow the same phonetic pattern as the material in Explode the Code. Beyond the Code can be used independently or as part of the Explode the Code program.
This 2nd grade set includes the following books:
- Explode the Code Books 5 and 5 1/2 introduce word families all-alk, old-olt-oll, ild-ind; qu words; three-letter blends thr, shr, scr, str, spr, spl; diphthong -ey; three sounds of -ed. .
- Explode the Code Books 6 and 6 1/2 present vowel plus r words; ar, or, er, ir, ur, wor, war; diphthongs 00, ea, ie, oi-oy, ou-ow, au-aw, igh, and ew-ui-ue-ou.
- Teacher Guide for Explode the Code books 5 and 6. The Teacher Guides provide detailed lesson plans for each lesson in the books. Lesson plans include phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing and differentiation.
- Beyond the Code Books 1 and 2. Each book has 104 pages.
Each book includes a posttest at the end of the lessons to measure skills aquired from the lessons. Explode the Code lessons and tests provide beginning readers with the following key benefits:
