WORDLY WISE 3000 OVERVIEW

This popular vocabulary series offers 3,000 carefully selected words from literature, textbooks, and SAT-prep books to instruct by using reading, writing, and a variety of exercises.

Each 15-word lesson begins with an alphabetized Word List that gives pronunciations, parts of speech, and concise definitions, and uses each word in a sentence. Engaging sentences provide a mnemonic anchor for the word.

Books 1-5 contain the following exercises:

Exercise A: Finding Meanings, Students choose 2 phrases from among 4 to write a sentence that correctly uses a word from the Word List

Exercise B: Just the Right Word As in the original Wordly Wise, students substitute the precise vocabulary word for a synonymous phrase

Exercise C: Applying Meanings, Students answer questions that require them to apply the meaning of the vocabulary word to a particular situation

Exercise D: Word Relationships, In Book 1, students complete a two-sentence description of a situation by supplying a vocabulary word. Book 2 calls for recognition of synonyms and antonyms; Books 3-5 add analogies.

Exercise E: Narrative, The nonfiction reading selection includes the lessons vocabulary words in context. Comprehension questions follow the narrative and either include the vocabulary word or ask the students to include the word in their answers. Narratives are informative and fun; they are an excellent way for students to absorb new words and their meanings.

In Books 6-9, all exercises become more challenging. For example, in Exercise D, students read 3 sentences, none of which contains the vocabulary word, and decide which situation described in the sentences suggests the word. Analogies are more difficult and narrative topics, more suited for older students, are written in a more complex style. They are followed by questions that either include the vocabulary words or are designed to elicit them in their answers.

The Wordly Wise section, a popular feature of the original Wordly Wise, has been retained in all of the books. In a conversational tone, it deals with correct usage, gives information on interesting word histories, and points out common verbal pitfalls to avoid.

Student favorites, the Crossword Puzzle and the Hidden Message Puzzle, have also been retained. They review words from the preceding lessons.

Wordly Wise 3000 Tests

As mandatory state testing becomes the norm, teachers are finding that they must not only teach their own curricula, but also prepare students for these tests. Sometimes this means not enough time to do both tasks well. The new Wordly Wise 3000 Tests can help.

  • Wordly Wise 3000 Tests assess students' understanding of every word in the series, so teachers get a clear picture of students' progress.

  • Wordly Wise 3000 Tests are presented in the formats most often used in state testing programs.

  • There is one test for each Wordly Wise 3000 Lesson in books A-C and 1-5. Every word from the lesson-including all its forms and multiple meanings-is tested. Cumulative Tests for the first and second halves of each Wordly Wise 3000 book feature new passages of the type students will find on state tests. These Cumulative Tests include a selection of words from each half of the book in context, so students can apply what they have learned while they get valuable practice in test-taking.

Presented in reproducible blackline master format, with answer keys, Wordly Wise 3000 Tests add a valuable assessment resource to the classroom.
