WORDLY WISE OVERVIEW
Each lesson in Books 1-9 introduces about 12-18 new words; the number of new words increases as the books become more challenging. The lessons contain several exercises that reinforce learning by teaching students to use words precisely in a variety of situations. Exercises A, B, and C use the new words in context, teach multiple meanings of words, and give practice using the words in sentences.
Correct completion of Exercise D in Books 1-3 and Exercise E in 4-6 gives part of a quotation, poem, or riddle. Beginning with Book 4, an additional exercise addresses roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
Books 7-9 include exercises dealing with analogies, connotations, and literal and metaphorical usage.
Each lesson ends with the popular Wordly Wise section that gives information on correct usage and interesting word histories, and points out common verbal pitfalls.
The lessons in each book are divided into chapters; after each chapter, students complete a review Crossword Puzzle. At the end of Books 1-3 is an alphabetized glossary of all the vocabulary words covered; starting with Book 4, the glossary is replaced by a comprehensive word list that appears at the beginning of each book. Books 1-6 contain approximately 375 vocabulary words each; Books 7-9 contain approximately 500.
