Format: Hard Cover
Publisher: Apologia Educational Ministries
Recommended Grade: 9th
This course is designed to be the student's first high school science course. Typically, we recommend taking this course in the 9th grade, usually the same year as Algebra I. Written by a former university professor, it is readable, easy to understand, and has experiments which can be performed safely at home.
The second edition of our biology course will have several features that enhance the value of the course:
- There will be more color in this edition as compared to the previous edition, and many of the drawings that are in the first edition have been replaced by pictures or higher-quality drawings. This is especially true for the sections in which microscopic structures are discussed.
- Dr. Wile has been answering student questions on the course for six years. Those questions have allowed him to realize what sections of the book could be written more clearly. Thus, this edition of the biology course is even more understandable than the first edition!
- More topics have been added, such as a discussion of the proposed changes to the standard system of taxonomy. In addition, more details have been added on many topics.
- Some of the experiments have been changed to make them even more interesting and easy to perform.
- There is a course website that has links to materials which provide extra help as well as interesting news related to biology.
- Advanced students who have the time and the ability for additional learning will be directed to online resources that will give them access to advanced subject matter.
- The student text has graphic icons that tell the student when there is a related multimedia presentation on the optional multimedia CD.
- To aid the student in reviewing the course as a whole, there is an appendix that contains questions which cover the entire course. The solutions and tests manual has the answers to those questions.
- There are cumulative tests in the solutions and tests guide if the parent/teacher wants to give the student quarterly, semester, or final exams.
- Finally, even though the module tests are found in the solutions and tests manual (so that the parent/teacher always has a copy of them), a second set of tests is also provided in a perforated booklet. This will allow the student to be given the tests without referring to the solutions and tests manual.
Please note that because of the differences between the first and second editions, students in a group setting cannot use both. They must all have the same edition. Because of this, the first edition of the course will still be available for those in schools or support groups that use the first edition.
What's In the Textbook?
COURSE OVERVIEW:
The text for the course is written in a conversational style, making it easy to read and understand. It contains student exercises (with detailed solutions), experiments designed to be done in the home, and tests (with detailed solutions). This Apologia course is taught wholly from a creationist viewpoint, with emphasis on the incredible design features apparent throughout God's Creation. It was field-tested on 140 home schooled students in 22 different states, and the response was over-whelming. The author especially concentrates on the myths generated by the hysterical environmentalist movement.
Parents who thought that their student hated science were pleased to find that this was their child's favorite course!
Apologia science biology curriculum presents high school biology lessons from a Christian biblical perspective. Course materials are available in books or software formats. Recommended for school or homeschool. |
